A Tree House according to AI

According to artificial intelligence our tree house is too perfect to be real!

Today we asked three different AI engines to create a image of a tiny tree house nestled in Maremma, Toscana. The only condition was that the image must look realistic. The results, which you can find below, were interesting and surprizing. We then asked these three engines to analyse a photo our own real three house in Maremma Toscana and let us know whether our image is a real photo or artificially generated image.

Gemini, developed by Google, created an image with a simple rustic touch nestled in a deep forest. It does not really convey a feel of Tuscan Maremma. Instead it focused on a fairy tale- like, mystic atmosphere.

Chat GPT by OpenAI generated a beautiful image, but we could not persuade the app to make it more realistic. While romantic and emphasizing the unique Tuscan landscape, the image seems more like a cartoon than a real photograph.

Grok by xAI came up with an image that accentuated fairy tale like atmosphere similar to that of Gemini. We appreciated the fact that a part of the tree is growing out of the house, just like our own tree house.

We then asked all three AI chatbots to give us a feedback on the other two images and guess whether these are artificially generated or real. Here are the answers:

  1. 1.Gemini guessed correctly that the image of Chat GPT as AI generated, but mistakenly considered image #3 of Grok as a real photo.
  2. 2. Chat GPT could said that the image created by Gemini is most likely AI generated. It also guessed correctly that image #3 is AI generated.
  3. 3. Grok guessed correctly that both Gemini and Chat GPT images are AI generated.

Finally, we asked all three AI assistants to describe a real photo of our own tree house in Maremma Toscan and tell us whether it is AI generated, or real. Here are the answers:

Grok: “The scene seems almost too perfect with the lights, the tree house and the surroundings forest arranged in a harmonious, idealized way. The atmosphere has a dreamy quality, with the deep blue sky and the warm glow of the lights creating cozy, enchanting vibe. This idealized aesthetic is often a hallmark of AI generated images, where the goal is to create a visually stunning, harmonious composition rather than capturing the natural imperfections of a real scene…”

According to Grok, the real photo of our tree house is 85% AI generated.

Gemini: “The way the fairy lights illuminate the tree house and the surrounding foliage appears natural. The shadows are consistent with the light sources. AI often struggles with complex and realistic lighting scenarios with multiple light sources.”

According to Gemini, the image has 90% probability of being real.

Chat GPT gave this answer: “This image looks very convincing as a real photograph. It has natural imperfections, depth, and detail that you would expect from a real world capture, especially with difficult lighting (nighttime and string lights). The railings are made of natural, twisted wood. AI sometimes struggles with these organic forms. Here they look convincingly random and natural.”

According to Chat GPT the image is 95% authentic because of natural lighting, authentic wood textures, correct depth and no visible AI artifacts.

Interestingly, Grok, which created the most realistic image of a tree house failed to guess that our own tree house Toscana was a real photo. On the other hand, Chat GPT created the most artificially looking image but it made the best analysis of our own tree house and identified the image most accurately as a real photo. While Gemini created a decent looking AI generated “photo”, it also guessed with 90% accuracy that our photo is real.

To play with AI the way we did, may be interesting, but artificial intelligence is still far from crating a real life experience. We can look at a tree house on a computer screen, we can imagine it and create let the AI create it anyway we want to, but we are not yet able to ask AI to provide us with a real taste. For that we invite you to taste the beauty of our tree house, which as Grok put it is “too perfect” to be real. Call us to fix a date to see how perfect it really is.
