Tuscany is one of the most beloved Italian regions. Its timeless charm stems from a perfect balance between art, landscapes, history, food, and hospitality. But if there is one corner of Tuscany that captivates those in search of authentic experiences, it is Maremma.
Located in the south of the region, among green hills, ancient woods, wild beaches, and medieval villages, the Maremma is a land that seduces slowly but deeply. It is not a picture-postcard Tuscany, it is a living, real, genuine Tuscany. That's why more and more travellers choose it for their vacations in the Maremma.
To tell the story better, we decided to interview seven travellers from around the world. Here's what they told us.
- Markus, Swiss from Zurich – 52 years old Question: Markus, what made you choose the Maremma for your vacation? Answer: “As a Swiss, I love the mountains, but the Maremma won me over with its balance: you can wake up in the hills, have lunch in a farmhouse under the olive trees, and go swimming in the sea in the afternoon. And then... the food is fantastic. Tortelli maremmani have become my favorite dish!”
- Hanna, German from Cologne – 45 years old Question: What fascinates you about the Tuscan Maremma? Answer: “Nature! My husband and I come here to walk. We love the trails in the Maremma Park area, among wild horses and pine forests. We always stay in farmhouses; we like the simplicity and Italian hospitality. Here, you don't feel like a tourist, but a guest.”
Jasper, Dutch from Utrecht – 36 years old Question: You're a glamping lover, aren't you? Answer: “Absolutely. Glamping has been a trend in the Netherlands for years, but in the Maremma it has something extra: the landscape! I stayed in a yurt among the vineyards and in the evening I saw the stars like never before. For me, holidays in the Maremma are all about silence, wine, and the sky.”
Rachel, American from Portland – 29 years old Question: How did you discover the Maremma? Answer: “I was looking for a place in Tuscany away from the usual tourist circuits. I found a photo of a tree house in the Maremma on Instagram... and I fell in love with it. I booked the next day! I was struck by the calm, the kindness of the people, and that feeling of being connected to nature.”
Javier, Spanish from Barcelona – 39 years old Question: What do you think sets the Maremma apart from other places in Italy? Answer: “Everything in the Maremma is authentic. It wasn't built for tourists, it has remained as it was, and that's wonderful. You can cycle through the hills, find a village festival, taste homemade wine. And then there's the sea: wild, clean, incredible.”
Lotte and Emil, couple from Belgium – 41 and 43 years old Question: What are you looking for when you plan your vacations in the Maremma? Answer: “Simplicity and space. In Belgium, we live in the city, but here we wake up to birds singing. Every summer we look for a different farmhouse, but always in Maremma. Once we happened to sleep next to a lavender field... a scent that still accompanies us.”
Matteo, Italian from Milan – 34 years old Question: You are Italian, yet you always come back to the Maremma. Why? Answer: "I love all of Tuscany, but the Maremma has something that touches my heart. It could be the light, the people, the smell of the earth, the very pleasant and friendly Tuscan dialect. But what really made me fall in love is the Agriturismo Pereti, a place that to describe as magical would be an understatement. I went there with my partner: we slept in the Tree House, had breakfast among the olive trees, got lost in the woods, and found ourselves in a saltwater pool with a view of the hills. It's a place where you can feel true silence, the kind that heals. We'll be back every summer."
Holidays in the Maremma are just that: a collection of different stories, but united by the search for authenticity, nature, and beauty. And ultimately, that's what makes the Maremma so special.
